Kumily, the gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve (Thekkady), the international renewed tourist place, the spice land of peermade valley, the state border…Some historians believe that the old Tamil city Kuzhumoor, which has reference in the old Tamil literature and Kumily is the one and the same place.
The name of the place might have tribal references like Agali and Parali. People began to migrate to this hilly eastern part of the old Travancore state in the later half of the 19th century, it became intensified after the construction of the K.K road in the early decade of the 20th century. Humanity and culture might have older history here as the tribes are predominant here.
Nannangadis the burial pots - were excavated from here. It is believed that the samanthas of the Pandya dynasty ruled here and the ancient Mangaladevi Temple in the forest was constructed by them. A large section of the people believe that Godess Mangaladevi is Kannaki herself as rested here on her way to Kodungallor - after the big fire at Madurai
In a nearby place Just two Kilometers from Kumily College of Teacher Education, Kumily started functioning at Amaravathy( 1st Mile) in the year 1997.Amaravathy, the place where the evicted farmers of the Idukki Project, Here A.K.G and father Fr. Vadakkan fought for the cause of the downtrodden.
